A message from the Headteacher
This week I have been given very heartening information about the impact of the Accelerated Reader programme which has been implemented this year to encourage pupils to read more. One of the features of the scheme is that the number of books and therefore the number of words read is recorded so we can see exactly how much reading is being undertaken by the pupils. I was amazed to discover that twenty one pupils have read more than half a million words, fifteen pupils have read well over one million words already and one pupil has read well over two million words this term!
As you will know from speaking to your children and the information in the newsletters they take a quick quiz after finishing each book to ensure that their knowledge about the book is sufficient to confirm that the book has been read properly and the pupils’ scores in these quizzes are very high indicating that the process is meaningful. My thanks go to the English department in particular to Miss Cave and our Librarian Mrs Payne for their work to support this programme. One of life’s great pleasures is to be absorbed by the storyline of a good book and the impact on the pupils’ wider literacy skills cannot be under-estimated.
I look forward to some of these pupils following the lead of ex-pupil Tara Behan who, having left school only a few years ago, has already had a children’s book published recently. Well done to her. It is always a pleasure to report on the success of past pupils and we are looking forward to holding our first awards evening for students who were in year 13 last year. This will take place just before the end of term when they have returned from their various universities. It will be great to see them again.
